Lindsborg Community Hospital Scholarship Opportunities

The Lindsborg Community Hospital and the Lindsborg Community Health Care Foundation are offering three scholarship opportunities again this spring. Guidelines and applications are available online at www.lindsborghospital.org

The first scholarship honors a young man who had completed coursework and had begun working in healthcare before his death in 2007. A student of Smoky Valley High School, his family believed his certified nurse aide training made a difference in his life. The Jordan Heimer 2013 Allied Health Memorial Scholarship Fund will award $300 to a SVHS senior enrolling in any college, vocational, technical or trade school to pursue a career in allied healthcare. The application deadline is April 17.

Allied Health professionals are defined as "those involved with the delivery of healthcare services related to the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders". Those fields include, but are not be limited to: specialized therapies (physical, occupational, speech); diagnostic medical sonographers, respiratory therapists, medical technologists, dental hygienists, dietary management, information systems or health information management.

One of two nursing-specific scholarships, The Korbe Family Nursing Scholarship provides assistance for young men or women that have chosen to pursue a career in nursing. Applications are open to Smoky Valley High School seniors or alumni in their freshman or sophomore year of college, and will provide at least one $500 Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic years. Successful applicants will be pursuing education leading to a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).

A retired registered nurse, Norma Korbe and her family advocate nursing as a career. Norma retired from the Lindsborg Community Hospital after 27 years of service in 1996. The application deadline is April 15th.

A third scholarship exists for RNs, LPNs and CNAs employed by Lindsborg Community Hospital, Family Health Care Clinic and Bethany Home. The successful applicant for the Mae Walline Nursing Scholarship will be an individual exemplifying excellence in providing nursing care, and provides funding to support nursing education. Funds can be used for college hours, post-graduate hours or continuing education units.

First awarded during National Nurses' week in 2003 in honor of Mae Walline, a registered nurse employed at the Lindsborg Community Hospital from 1948-1979, Mae was a dedicated and skilled nurse with a keen eye for detail. It is a well known fact that Mae never left town before first checking in to see if her services were needed. April 29 is the deadline for this application.

All three of these scholarships are made available and are supported primarily by family members, but contributions are accepted through the hospital's development office.
