Bone Density Imaging (DEXA)

Lindsborg Community Hospital has recently added 3D mammography and bone density (DEXA) imaging services to advance the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and improve access to two important health screenings for people in the surrounding area.

The services had previously been provided by mobile imaging units with limited availability at the hospital. Now, dedicated machines have been installed on site in the same room at Lindsborg Community Hospital – giving patients the opportunity to receive both tests at the same appointment.

“Many providers recommend these screenings for women together, as they are both vital to understanding and protecting health,” said Jodie Miller, radiology director at Lindsborg Community Hospital. “By offering them locally, we are ensuring patients in the Smoky Valley community have access to the latest technology that supports early detection and proactive care.”

3D mammography combines multiple breast X-rays into a 3D picture that has become the latest standard for breast cancer screening and early detection. The technology has the ability to discover abnormalities within the breast that may be hidden on a conventional mammogram. DEXA is an imaging study used to measure bone density and body composition in order to screen for osteoporosis.

“DEXA assesses bone health and helps determine the risk for fractures, osteoporosis, or osteopenia,” Miller said. “With this information, patients and their providers can take proactive steps to prevent fractures and slow further bone loss.”

Both tests are operated by professional technologists who have completed hours of training.

With the ability to offer these services in-house, Lindsborg Community Hospital can now offer patients appointments on a more consistent basis that work best with their schedule.

“The demand for screening mammography has continued to grow to the point that our mobile service could no longer meet the need,” Miller said. “Because early detection is proven time and time again to improve outcomes for patients diagnosed with breast cancer, we felt it was our responsibility to expand this service. By bringing 3D mammography in-house, we can now offer patients timely access to this essential diagnostic tool, along with more scheduling flexibility and opportunities.”
